Climate change and energy
Increasing global energy security is the current focus of this programme, with political instabilities in the Middle East, Japan’s recent nuclear crisis, and increased global energy consumption creating challenges for energy producers and consumers.
A series of meetings to discuss the future development of renewable energy, in partnership with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), has recently concluded. Future discussions are planned on the role of unconventional hydrocarbons and the EU’s future gas supply. Two energy security events were held overseas, in Romania and Latvia, supported by their respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Meetings are also convened to discuss how best to adapt to climate change and to prepare for the increasing nature and impact of natural disasters which occur as a result of climate change, particularly in developing countries.
