Urban risks: moving from humanitarian responses to disaster prevention

The theme incorporates recent experience of natural disasters (including the Haiti earthquake, Chile, Padang Indonesia and large scale floods in Manila, Jakarta, Rio de Janeiro, Hanoi, Vientiane and China).

This conference provides an international forum that will share key lessons, and identify ways of improving humanitarian responses. Plus sustainable disaster risk reduction measures.

Confirmed speakers include Sir John Holmes, former Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Co-ordination), sharing his  reflections after dinner.

Other first day presentations are by:

  • Yasemin Aysan (former Under-Secretary General, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent)
  • Apurva Sanghi (World Bank)
  • Dr Bhichit Rattakul (Asia Disaster Preparedness Centre)
  • George Deikun (UN-Habitat)

Participants are welcome with current expertise or an active interest in the topic. A broad spread of nationalities and institutions are represented.
