Kenyan fuel pipeline blast flooding in South Asia

The blast of a leaking fuel pipeline in Kenya and the explosion at a French nuclear storage plant on 12 September as well as the on-going flooding across South Asia are timely reminders of the environmental and humanitarian impacts of disasters.

 

Environmental emergencies: strengthening the multilateral humanitarian and environmental response

A group of humanitarian and environmental experts from national and international organisations, NGOs and the private sector are currently meeting in Switzerland for a Wilton Park discussion on environmental emergencies to identify ways to improve international co-ordination both in response to and prevention of such disasters.

UN Under Secretary General, Sha Zukang, who is chairing the Rio 2012 Summit on Sustainable Development will speak on next steps and Rio + 20 and how to improve international responses to environmental emergencies such as those witnessed in recent days.
