Today is World Humanitarian Day, this recognises those who face danger and adversity in order to help others. The day was chosen by the UN General Assembly to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. It is a day to commemorate all people who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the world. It also serves to raise awareness of the importance of humanitarian action.

As part of our humanitarian programme we ran a meeting in Istanbul in October 2013 on Advancing humanitarian action: engaging with rising global actors to develop new strategic dialogue and partnerships. This meeting highlighted the growing need for humanitarian action and among other aims sought to strengthen mutual understanding among humanitarian actors on matters of policy and practice. The outcomes are discussed in more detail in the report.

We have also worked with partner organisations to run a number of meetings which aim to reduce the risk of disasters and thus the need for humanitarian action. Working with the Asia Disaster Preparedness Centre (ADPC) we ran an event in Bangkok which focused on the Challenges in flood risk management in urban areas of river deltas in South and South East Asia. The following year, in collaboration with theIntergovernmental Authority in Development (IGAD) we ran an event in Nairobi which discussed Strengthening technological capacities and information access for improving disaster risk reduction in the Horn of Africa. Along the same theme we are currently planning a meeting in Manila with ADPC on the role of gender issues in disaster prevention, preparedness and response in Asia, which will take place in 2014/15.
