Business and human rights: advancing the agenda (WPS05/33)

In April 2005, the UN Commission on Human Rights requested the UN Secretary-General to appoint a Special Representative to take forward work on the area of business and human rights.  The mandate of the SRSG includes the identification and clarification of standards of corporate responsibility and accountability for business with regard to human rights, as well as an elaboration of the role of States in effectively regulating and adjudicating the role of business.

  • Do human rights apply directly to companies?
  • If so which ones and to what extent?
  • Where does corporate responsibility for human rights begin and end?
