In October 2024, the British and Irish Embassies to the Holy See, along with Islamic Relief and the International Union of Superiors General, hosted a Wilton Park meeting to launch the Women, Faith and Climate Network.
Women from 15 different countries and 8 different faith traditions committed to radical collaboration to scale up the powerful reach and influence of women of faith to go further, faster towards achieving climate goals. Together they represented more than 73 million women of faith worldwide, made up of groups ranging from the Mothers’ Union with over 4 million members in 83 countries and the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation with its 6 million women.
The Network aims to promote transformative change to tackle the global climate and nature crisis, harnessing the power that comes from 80 percent of the world’s population identifying with a faith.
Practically, it aims to increase the visibility of women led climate action, scale up best practices, foster radical collaboration among diverse women of faith networks and mobilise women of faith in support of the mass mobilisation of women for climate action.
The Network was formally launched by former UN High Commissioner on Human Rights and Project Dandelion co-founder Mary Robinson at COP29 in Azerbaijan.
This will be the first formal meeting of the newly formed Network aiming to share best practice and develop new partnerships to scale up radical action on climate change.
