Held on the margins of London Climate Action Week, the Wilton Park dialogue on ‘Working Together on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels’ brought together participants from governments, multilateral institutions, academia and civil society. The event explored how to mobilise coordinated international support for Global South fossil fuel-producing countries. Building on recommendations under development through the COP30 Presidency’s TAFF Roadmap, discussions focused on understanding country-specific challenges and identifying practical pathways for tailored support to national transition planning.
A key theme throughout the dialogue was that transitioning away from fossil fuels must be approached through the lens of economic transformation, resilience and development, rather than solely as a climate challenge. Participants examined the fiscal, economic and political risks faced by producer countries as global energy systems evolve and discussed how international partners can support orderly and equitable transitions that strengthen long-term prosperity and stability. The dialogue helped build a shared understanding of national priorities and highlighted opportunities for cooperation to ensure that countries are better positioned to capture the benefits of the clean energy transition while managing associated risks.
