I first came to Wilton Park toward the end of the West African Ebola crisis. I was part of the response in Guinea and immersed in the national response for nearly a year. The response efforts demanded courage and relentless innovation in tools and approaches. My initial role was to ensure data from the emergency call center. My organization managed and reached key response teams and partners who made up the coordination. By 2016, we were cautiously hopeful and began analyzing areas for improvement.
My organization’s leadership decided to add to my primary responsibilities for post-Ebola efforts. We needed to ensure all health professionals were prepared to respond to future epidemics. I was to lead the work to digitize Guinea’s national community health worker training program. While I was honored to manage the project and accepted, the task was daunting. I was unexpectedly invited to a Wilton Park meeting during these turbulent times. Little did I know that the invitation would begin an extraordinary journey that has since spanned nine transformative meetings, each deepening my conviction in the power of collaboration and innovation.
From the interactions over email to the warm reception at the airport and the unforgettable first moments at Wilton Park, I was in an atmosphere like none I had experienced. The meticulously planned days and the kind staff and management communicated a strong sense of purpose. From that first visit, I realized I had entered a place where ideas flourished. Walking through the corridors adorned with decades of intellectual heritage, I felt humbled and invigorated. I knew and later confirmed that every conversation was an opportunity to challenge established norms respectfully, and every encounter was a seed for future breakthroughs.
That first meeting was a masterclass in global cooperation and ingenuity. I listened to and exchanged with representatives from diverse global health fields. Those with key global health roles openly shared insights on policy frameworks, academics shared cutting-edge research, and industry leaders articulated visionary strategies. I had the opportunity to speak about my experiences deploying technology-based solutions in an emergency context. It meant the world to me to confirm that my experiences and ideas as a practitioner were valued. I shared the challenges and potential of digitizing a training program for the post-Ebola context. I also noted the need to carry the collaborative spirit I witnessed at Wilton Park into the field. Other participants voiced their interest and belief in the potential of digitized training programs to revolutionize emergency response and strengthen health systems. Every contribution was met with active listening and genuine respect.
I was inspired as I discovered kindred spirits among the intelligent, friendly, and remarkably respectful attendees at Wilton Park. Then, I realized I was not alone in pursuing innovative solutions for global health challenges. There was an undercurrent of mutual commitment to harness the power of digital innovation to save lives and strengthen health systems around the globe.
That first meeting was more than a professional milestone; it was a catalyst that inspired me to look beyond the immediate crisis. The connections made at Wilton Park were instrumental in the next phase of my career. I continued to contribute to advancing digital health and eventually became co-chair of the World Health Organization’s inaugural Digital Health Technical Advisory Group. They also led to my co-founding the African Alliance of Digital Health Networks with another attendee. The African Alliance proposed developing a digital health leadership training program, which continues to benefit thousands of practitioners worldwide. The impact of these initiatives is a living testament to the enduring spirit of collaboration fostered at Wilton Park.
Since 2016, I have returned to Wilton Park on many occasions. Whether contributing to discussions on optimizing our global emergency response, discussing youth peace and security in Burkina Faso, or strategizing to maximize immunization efforts for meningitis, every session reaffirms my belief that Wilton Park is more than just a meeting venue. It is where ideas people from different backgrounds refine, connect, and envision a better future.
As I reflect on that first encounter, I am reminded of Wilton Park’s enduring ethos, listening with an open mind, contributing with authenticity, and honoring commitments beyond the confines of the meeting. The people I met were not driven by accolades but by a genuine desire to create tangible, positive change. Conversations were deeply respectful, a rare blend of humility and ambition that continues to draw me back to Wilton Park.
I will never forget how the beginnings of my digitization project were met with enthusiasm and understanding. The impact of and relationships built during that first meeting laid the foundation for ongoing initiatives shaping my professional endeavors. The African Alliance of Digital Health Networks, born from those early conversations, has inspired collaboration amongst digital health practitioners, policymakers, and regional organizations in and outside Africa.
It is this spirit of genuine collaboration that continues to inspire me. Every time I return to Wilton Park, the discussions are constantly enriching, the connections deeply personal, and the shared commitment to effecting meaningful change palpable in every conversation. The respectful, solution-oriented atmosphere at Wilton Park has, time and again, reaffirmed my belief that when intelligent minds come together with a shared purpose, the possibilities are boundless.
As I now share this story as part of Wilton Park’s cherished heritage, I do so with the hope that it will inspire others.
