Conclusion

Although the foundations of Transitional Justice (TJ) are changing, this event underscored how its mechanisms still serve as important tools for helping societies move forward after conflict. In a world of proliferating conflict and growing authoritarianism, many participants felt that the international community still bore a moral responsibility to defend human rights and support victims and survivors; this was reflected throughout conversations at the event.

This Wilton Park dialogue offered diverse, critical but constructive perspectives into the future of TJ. Although TJ may be in a state of transition, the event validated its relevance and its importance to providing victims with what they are asking for: truth, justice, reparations, and guarantees of non-recurrence. To adapt to changes in the international order, participants concurred that TJ must adopt tailored strategies for diverse communities and multi-level stakeholder engagement. The event concluded by suggesting that ‘think-spaces’ like Wilton Park can play a critical role in reframing TJ for the modern world, while also endowing participants with ‘renewed energy’. These conversations are imperative for international efforts to move from victors’ justice to victims’ justice.
